To start with I need to get my potential clients attention, they want to hear and see you are the right person for the job they need doing. You can get their attention by promoting yourself with business cards, websites, blogs etc. At the moment I have my course blogs,
as well as my own blog I run outside of college showcasing work I do in my own time,
On my blogs I am showing the range of work I can do and putting it out their in the public eye, also in connection with PPD I am currently designing my own business cards with my designs on them, I am doing a range of 4 so there is an aspect of collecting them all which makes them a bit more exciting and special.
With this promotional material I also need to build interest to get clients knowing about me and getting my work out there so I might get approached for doing some work. I thought about sending mail outs with some of my work in them and links to my blog so they can see more of my work. People like receiving letters, people don't send them as much anymore, so by sending mail outs and letters I will be doing something more special and interesting.
Something like this would be amazing to send out to people,

You need to convince them that they should work with you, by doing something different can make you stand out, working for a charity for an example will be rewarding for yourself and look good when you potential clients consider working with you. Also things like designing only using sustainable materials, this is something I want to start doing within my design work. Being eco friendly is so important to the environment and a lot of potential clients will agree with working with sustainable sources.
A lot of work can come from being in the right place at the right time, it may just that a client is looking for a designer who matches your work style, you just need to keep your eyes open for opportunity.
Also reinforcing yourself after you have done a job for a client is important, keep in contact with them so they always have you in the back of their mind as a potential designer. I think maybe send them something, some new work you have done, just to keep them interested and not forget you are there and so they come back.
