Enterprise Task 4-Who else is out there - How good are they?

For this task I have found 3 graphic designers to look at and analyse,
Hansje van Halem-http://hansje.net/
Ross Gunther-http://rossgunter.com/

All three of these designers are freelance which is a way of working I would like to go into in the future, however it has its negatives as well as the positives that come with working for yourself. They are all print based designers, doing a variety of work within this media, which is the area of graphic design I am interested in.

I am going to start by looking at each designers strengths and weaknesses before I write up my 250 word task.

-Morey Talmor-http://www.moreytalmor.com/

Strengths
- Lives in Brooklyn, New York which is a major city of the world so their is good opportunity to find work and make connections.
- Does a range of design for printed media, such as: editorial design, identities, packaging design and illustration so has a range of different work.
- Is freelance so can travel where work needs, take commissions and is more flexible.

Weaknesses
-Being freelance has its positive points but also comes with financial unstable you can never be sure when you'll get your next job and when you will get paid.
-Working in a very saturated market, needs to make work that's different and makes them standout.

-Hansje van Halem-http://hansje.net/

Strengths
-Lives in Amsterdam in the Netherlands which is a great place for graphic design, a lot of good design comes out of the Netherlands so it's a good place to be for connections and reputation.
-Has done two degrees one in Graphic Design and one in Graphic and Typography Design so will have a wide knowledge of the subject.
-Has won awards and has a good client base so is well established and has a good reputation.

Weaknesses
-Being freelance has its positive points but also comes with financial unstable you can never be sure when you'll get your next job and when you will get paid.
-Works in printed media, as technology developes is just working in printed media enough, do designers know need to work in digital media as well.

Ross Gunther-http://rossgunter.com/

Strengths

-Works with a design studio as well as being freelance, giving a more financially stable working situation.
-Works in printed and digital media, showing skills in both areas and giving him a wider client market.
-Based in London, big city with a lot of opportunity to gather more clients and contacts.

Weaknesses
-Working for a studio and freelance means there maybe times when you can't do all the work that is asked of you, you may have to choose one over the other to make sure you produce work to the best possible standards for the client
-Living in London has its perks but it also means there is a lot of competition to get your work seen in a very busy and saturated market and city

My 250 word statement/evaluation.

There are many design studios and freelance graphic designers out there, they are all striving to be seen and do something different which makes them stand out from the crowd. I have picked three practitioners and looked at their strengths and weaknesses. I have looked at Morey Talmor(http://www.moreytalmor.com/),Hansje van Halem(http://hansje.net/), Ross Gunther(http://rossgunter.com . They all have their strengths as well as weaknesses and looking at these have helped me understand more about my own practise and considerations of how I will work in the future.

They are all freelance designers but Ross Gunther also works as part of a design studio some of the time, this has its positives as well as negatives. The positives are that you are free to travel to where the work is and you have more choice on what briefs you want to take on, you have less commitments which means you may get the clients over someone else and open up more opportunities. It also means you can move with social patterns and trends more and move to where these trends are emerging with more ease.
The weaknesses of being freelance is the financial unstability that comes with it, there is not gaurenteen you'll get work or where your next job is coming from. It is an obstical that has to been faced if you choose to go freelance and could threated your living condidtions.

Another factor that I have noticed as a potentinal strength or weakness of your work is where you're based and located. All three of the designers I have looked at live in big cities, London, New York and Amsterdam which is good for opportunities, being in a place with a high population of people there are more opportunities to work with people and get yourself out there. However there is also the negative side of living in a big city, there is more competition and you have to do more to be seen and have a good USP which makes you stand out.

I think looking at already exsisting and practicing professionals is a good way to anaylse your own work and how will be best for you to work to get the best opportunites and optimise your positives within your working life.

Enterprise Task 4-Who else is out there - how good are they?-Notes

For this Enterprise task we have been asked to evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of three practitioners or design agencies as objectively as you can.
We have to assess what opportunities for your own practise have revealed themselves to you as a result of this analysis and evaluation.

In responding to this task you will need to consider the following questions:
Who am I competing against?
What do they offer?
What makes me better?
What makes me different?

The task also asks us to make references to SWOT and evaluate its usefulness as an analysis or evaluation tool.
I am going to go over the SWOT analysis to make sure I use it correctly.

SWOT-Strength, weakness, opportunity, threats.

Strengths:

  • What advantages does your organization have?
  • What do you do better than anyone else?
  • What unique or lowest-cost resources can you draw upon that others can't?
  • What do people in your market see as your strengths?
  • What factors mean that you "get the sale"?
  • What is your organization's Unique Selling Proposition (USP)?
Consider your strengths from both an internal perspective, and from the point of view of your customers and people in your market.
You should also be realistic - it's far too easy to fall prey to "not invented here syndrome." Also, if you're having any difficulty with this, try writing down a list of your organization's characteristics. Some of these will hopefully be strengths!
When looking at your strengths, think about them in relation to your competitors. For example, if all of your competitors provide high quality products, then a high quality production process is not a strength in your organization's market, it's a necessity.

Weaknesses:

  • What could you improve?
  • What should you avoid?
  • What are people in your market likely to see as weaknesses?
  • What factors lose you sales?
Again, consider this from an internal and external basis: Do other people seem to perceive weaknesses that you don't see? Are your competitors doing any better than you?
It's best to be realistic now, and face any unpleasant truths as soon as possible.

Opportunities:

  • What good opportunities can you spot?
  • What interesting trends are you aware of?
Useful opportunities can come from such things as:
  • Changes in technology and markets on both a broad and narrow scale.
  • Changes in government policy related to your field.
  • Changes in social patterns, population profiles, lifestyle changes, and so on.
  • Local events

Threats

  • What obstacles do you face?
  • What are your competitors doing?
  • Are quality standards or specifications for your job, products or services changing?
  • Is changing technology threatening your position?
  • Do you have bad debt or cash-flow problems?
  • Could any of your weaknesses seriously threaten your business?
